Mahalakotuwa is situated in the Central Province .It belongs to Matale district and has situated about 40 Km away from Matale city.Naturaly the village of Mahalakotuwa is situated in a mountainous area which is about 2560feet high of the sea level. The history of the village goes as far back as era of Rawana and it’s proved from the places such as Rawanagala ,Lakegala and Yahangala according to the legend , well built,strong,stubborn,person had been banished to the area as a punishment of the king and he has cultivated and developed this area within a very short time period .it is said that later even the queen had been to this area to witness the development .Even now this area is renowned for wellbuilt,strong,people. Mahalakotuwa is spread through out an area of 75 square miles and agriculture is the main livelihood of the villagers. paddy cultivation is basically done in the period of “maha”while the period of “yala”is full of vegetable cultivation.Trees like Jack,Dhel,Orange,Nelli are almost in every garden and meals which are consisted with hand picked vegetables and fruits proved the self sufficiency of the villagers.Although the “chena”cultivation is wellknown among the villagers it has been confined only to the gardens of the dwellers.Vegetables such as tomatoes,beans,chillie,brinjal and grains like kurakkan,sesom,greengram ,koupi,corn,are mostly sold to the boutiques of the villagers and normally consumed by the villagers them selves. Most peasants begin their day with a kurakkan roti and the rest of the day is spent with the heavy work of cultivation and that keeps the farmers fit and healthy.They are almost aware less of diabetes,cholesterol,and fatal cancers. Out standing The hospitality of the villagers is still greatly visible in the village.they are genuine and have a great rapport .The geographic factors of the village have made them supportive and nobody could live on their own as everybody has to depend on others in aspects.Although the “Aththam kramaya”(help each other when cultivating their fields)is unique for paddy cultivation.Most agricultural aspects take place in their village in the manner of “Aththam”. A compact family style could be still seen in the village .All grandparents,parents, children and grand children live in the same household and the ancient heritage is handed over to the next generation by the elders.Mostly they are gifted to the next generation as folk tales and poems. Childhood of the Village. Most of the times children are brought up with their parents and grand parents.At present they step in to the nursery school before entering the kindergarten.And the nursery schools basically held by some young who have passed their A/L exam.After the nursery education kids are entered to the primary school .There are 2 other schools in the vicinity and Mahalakotuwa Sri sumana M.V. is situated in Mahalakotuwa village. Children who bare footing to school in the morning ,straightly run to the rivers or paddy fields after school.Young boys support their parents by looking after cattle,feeding them and bringing food to places where their parents work.Young girls are little bit reluctant to step out the home and prefer to being with mother or grand mother.Little boys are fond of fruits like nelli,dan,himbutu,karamba and prefer to hang around with their peer groups to fill their pockets with these fruits.They have a thorough knowledge on jungle, animals and weather.The education passing from one generation to other has coursed this in a great scale.Most little boys have the inborn talent to swimming,diving,and several other water games. |
